Windows 10 ISO — From Microsoft
Need a Windows 10 ISO file for a clean installation, virtual machine, bootable USB drive, or reinstall? You can obtain Windows 10 installation media directly from Microsoft using its official download page.

Important: Use Microsoft's Official Download
When downloading a Windows ISO, use Microsoft's official software download website rather than an unofficial ISO mirror or file-sharing site.
Microsoft provides the Media Creation Tool for obtaining a Windows 10 ISO or creating USB installation media. Depending on your device and browser, its website may also display direct ISO download options.
Watch the MDTechVideos Tutorial
For a visual walkthrough, watch MDTechVideos' tutorial, “How To Download Windows 10 ISO File Directly From Microsoft [Tutorial].” It demonstrates downloading Microsoft's Media Creation Tool, choosing installation media, selecting the language and architecture, and saving an ISO file.
This tutorial was published on August 30, 2021. Microsoft's page layout and release labels may have changed since then, so follow the current options on the official download page.

How to Download the Windows 10 ISO
On a Windows PC, Microsoft's Media Creation Tool provides a way to download the ISO. This is the method demonstrated in the embedded MDTechVideos tutorial.
- Open Microsoft's official Windows 10 download page.
- Locate “Create Windows 10 installation media” and select “Download tool now.”
- Run the downloaded Media Creation Tool and approve the administrator prompt if requested.
- Read and accept the license terms if you agree to them.
- Select “Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) for another PC,” then click Next.
- Choose the language, edition, and architecture for the target computer. Uncheck “Use the recommended options for this PC” if you need different settings.
- Select “ISO file,” then click Next.
- Choose a save location with enough free space and wait for the download to complete.
If Microsoft displays a direct ISO download page instead, follow its edition, language, and architecture selections to download the image.
What Is a Windows 10 ISO?
An ISO file is a disk image containing installation files. A Windows 10 ISO can serve as installation media for a virtual machine, be mounted in Windows, or be used to prepare installation media.
Downloading the ISO does not install Windows immediately. It saves the installation image so you can use it later.
ISO File vs. Media Creation Tool
The ISO file and Media Creation Tool are related, but they are not the same thing.
- ISO file: The disk image containing Windows installation files.
- Media Creation Tool: Microsoft's utility for downloading an ISO or preparing USB installation media.
- Bootable USB drive: Prepared installation media that lets a compatible computer start Windows Setup from USB.
Can I Create a Bootable USB?
Yes. If your goal is a bootable USB installer rather than a saved ISO, select “USB flash drive” in the Media Creation Tool.
Microsoft specifies a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of space. Follow the tool's instructions to download the installation files and prepare the drive.
Can I Mount the Windows 10 ISO?
Yes. On a Windows computer that supports ISO mounting, right-click the downloaded ISO and select Mount. Windows opens it as a virtual DVD drive.
You can then browse the installation files or run setup.exe when appropriate for your installation scenario.
Mounting the ISO is different from booting from installation media. Review Windows Setup's compatibility messages and choices about what to keep before continuing.
Check Compatibility Before Installing
Before installing Windows 10, check the target computer's hardware compatibility and available manufacturer drivers. Microsoft's download page recommends reviewing system requirements and the PC manufacturer's support information.
Choose the correct architecture and language for your intended installation, and make sure there is sufficient storage available.
Do I Need a Product Key?
Downloading installation media and activating Windows are separate processes. You need a valid Windows license for the edition you install.
If the computer already has a digital license for the same Windows 10 edition, activation may be restored automatically after reinstalling and connecting to the internet.
Which Edition Should I Install?
Install the edition that matches your existing license, such as Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro. Installing an edition your device is not licensed for can cause activation problems.
Windows 10 Enterprise is not included in the standard Media Creation Tool download. Organizations should use their appropriate Microsoft licensing and download channels.
32-bit or 64-bit Windows 10?
Check the target computer's system type before choosing the ISO architecture. Microsoft's Media Creation Tool offers 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 10 installation options.
Do not rely only on the architecture of the computer you are using to download the ISO. Choose the option appropriate for the computer where Windows will be installed.
Important Windows 10 Support Information
Windows 10 Standard Support Has Ended
Microsoft's standard support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Downloading or reinstalling Windows 10 does not restart its support period.
Before installing Windows 10, review Microsoft's current guidance about upgrading to Windows 11 and Extended Security Updates for eligible Windows 10 devices. ESU requires enrollment and is separate from downloading the ISO.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where should I download Windows 10?
Use Microsoft's official Windows 10 software download page rather than an unofficial ISO mirror.
Is the Windows 10 ISO free to download?
Microsoft provides installation media for download, but downloading the files does not provide a Windows license. You need an appropriate license to activate the installation.
Why does Microsoft offer a tool instead of an ISO?
On a Windows PC, the download page commonly offers the Media Creation Tool. Run it and choose “ISO file” to save a Windows 10 installation image. The MDTechVideos tutorial above demonstrates this process.
Do I have to burn the ISO to a DVD?
No. Depending on your needs, you can mount the ISO, use it with a virtual machine, or prepare bootable USB installation media. Burning a DVD is only one option.
Can I use the ISO in a virtual machine?
Yes. Use it as the virtual machine's installation media, configure compatible virtual hardware, and ensure you have an appropriate Windows license.
Does reinstalling Windows 10 restore standard support?
No. Windows 10's standard support ended on October 14, 2025, regardless of when you install or reinstall it. Review Microsoft's current security and upgrade options before proceeding.
